Saturday, continued

So, with that digression, it was, without much surprise that Maida and I were asked to canvass one section of turf. After a consultation and realization that we're here to do whatever it takes to help Obama win Colorado, we agreed and headed out to Florida Road to hit a number of apartment buildings and small neighborhoods. Saturday was a beautiful day and most people were either away or didn't answer the door. However, given most of the people we were seeking out were confirmed Obama supporters (with a few exceptions), it was quite painless. Upon returning from our canvassing shift, we packed up for a little while and ran some errands (checking on the trailer at the RV park, to ensure the pipes hadn't frozen), a little shopping, and then it was back to the North Main staging location to meet with the field organizer, Mary to discuss our next job.

In the back patio, we discussed how EDAY mock elections went, tried to problem-solve a few issues and agreed to meet with Matt and Mary later in the afternoon to discuss a few ideas. That meeting, held in the evening, charged Maida and I with our largest project yet. For the next 10 days, Maida and I would be taking over the Election Day Get Out the Vote programming, thus allowing the paid Obama and Dem staff (all two of them) to focus on information being send from the campaign through the regional office in Denver (namely reporting numbers for the Obama campaign, three time a day related to direct voter contacts, phone calls made, volunteer shifts scheduled, etc as well as running everything else). The plan, in essence was to have Maida and I take over the logistics for scheduling EDAY Staging Locations and the volunteers for this using info from Matt, Mary, Kenzie and Lauren (two full-time volunteers who have been working with Matt and Mary for months) to fill the estimated 1050 volunteer shifts between Nov 1 and Nov 4. Yikes. With this idea hatched, we went home to sleep and dream about "what the hell did we just volunteer for...?"
